UBS Residential Attractiveness Index 2024: Schaffhausen Impresses

October 25, 2024

Choosing a new place to live is a major decision: good infrastructure, affordable real estate, and a variety of leisure activities are key factors. In the latest Residential Attractiveness Index (WAI), UBS compared Swiss municipalities based on these criteria – with Stein am Rhein and Schaffhausen securing top positions.

The Swiss population seeks a well-connected place to live, with shopping options, schools, healthcare, recreational activities from culture to sports, plenty of nature, peace, and proximity to water — and, of course, this ideal should also be affordable. In its latest Residential Attractiveness Index (WAI), UBS examined Swiss municipalities, comparing them within 13 regions. Schaffhausen’s municipalities fall under the “Zurich Region” in this analysis, alongside the cantons of Aargau, Glarus, Zurich, and parts of Schwyz. The cities of Stein am Rhein and Schaffhausen performed especially well in the study.

Family-Friendly Living

In its Residential Attractiveness Index (WAI), UBS assessed the appeal of municipalities for a family with two children, divided across three household types with varying income levels in rental housing. Stein am Rhein and Schaffhausen consistently ranked at the top across all categories, placing them among the most attractive residential areas in the "Zurich Region." These locations offer a balanced mix of strong infrastructure, diverse recreational options, and affordable living costs.
