Safety first! In the case of road accidents involving personal injury, one thing is certain: the police must be called immediately. But did you know that it is also advisable to call the police in the event of other accidents involving personal injury, whether at home, during sport or at work? Why? It's simple: in such cases, the police take charge of patient transportation.

In cases of acute illness or less serious injuries, your first point of contact is your family doctor. If this is not available, you can obtain information by calling 144, the number for medical emergencies. If the patient's condition allows for transportation, you can take them directly to the emergency ward of Schaffhausen Cantonal Hospital.

In an emergency, try to reach your own vet by telephone. The emergency vet for the Schaffhausen area is usually listed on the answering machine.

In Switzerland, there is a free choice of doctor for outpatient treatment. This does not apply to insured persons with a savings model in their basic health insurance. The costs of outpatient treatment in the immediate vicinity of your place of residence or work are covered by basic insurance. When you visit your doctor for the first time, you must present your health insurance certificate. The family doctors in the region run an emergency practice. This is located right next to the emergency room of the Schaffhausen hospitals.

A radiant smile, without compromise! Dental treatment is not normally covered by health insurance and must be paid for out of pocket. But don't worry - many health insurance companies offer attractive supplementary insurance plans. And there is good news for school-age children: They are entitled to low-cost treatment at the Schaffhausen School Dental Clinic.

The Schaffhausen area has two hospitals: the public Kantonsspital and the private Klinik Belair. Both institutions offer a high level of medical care. Referral to the hospital is usually made by the attending family doctor. In emergencies, however, you can also go directly to the emergency ward of the cantonal hospital. In hospitals, however, there is rarely a free choice of doctor. Exceptions to this are hospitals with an attending physician or supplementary insurance (private or semi-private).

All persons residing in Switzerland or working in Switzerland (including cross-border commuters) are obliged to take out compulsory health insurance in accordance with the KVG (Health Insurance Act). Registration must be made within three months of taking up residence or starting work (cross-border commuters) in Switzerland. Upon application to the Schaffhausen Social Insurance Office, foreign nationals may be exempted from compulsory insurance provided they have equivalent insurance cover for medical treatment in Switzerland. The benefits of basic insurance are the same for all health insurance companies and are precisely defined in the Health Insurance Act.

Basic insurance covers the three main areas of illness, accident and maternity. The insurance companies are obliged to accept every applicant who wishes to join the basic insurance. There are various savings models and it is worth comparing them with the various health insurance companies. If medical, hospital or medication services are provided, insured persons must contribute to these costs.

In addition to basic insurance, insurance companies also offer voluntary supplementary insurance, e.g. for dental treatment costs, home nursing care, etc. The health insurance companies are free to accept members. It should also be noted that health insurance companies do not insure all medical services.
